About this template

Trace an illustrated candidate key for a named Southern Ontario set. Starter contrasts an eastern white pine five-needle bundle with a sugar maple broad blade, five lobes, rounded notches and opposite twig pairs. Growing adds northern red oak bristle-tipped lobes and paper birch egg-shaped, double-toothed leaves, both with alternate arrangement. Original drawings show leaf shape and twig structure; the child sketches the observed specimen and records a possible candidate or Unknown. Unclear, compound or nonmatching leaves remain unknown. Pictures are not to scale and several species can resemble these candidates; confirm with a local guide. University and forestry references review the selected features, without making this small worksheet an exhaustive species determination.
